Why Bearings Decide Machine Reliability
The bearing life cycle, who influences it, and how this course is organised.

A small part with a large job
Almost every rotating machine on a site depends on bearings: pumps, fans, electric motors, gearboxes, compressors and conveyors. When a bearing stops working, the machine stops. On a critical pump this can stop a whole process unit.
A bearing is also a very good reporter. Heat, vibration, noise and wear debris from a bearing often show a problem somewhere else in the machine: a bent shaft, a misaligned coupling, pipe strain, water in the oil or the wrong grease. A technician who can read a bearing can find the real cause of many machine problems.
This course is written for people who already know the basic parts of rotating equipment and now need to choose, apply and diagnose. You will work with real cases, compare options and decide what to do when things go wrong.
The bearing life cycle
- 1
1
Select
The designer or engineer chooses the bearing type, size, clearance, cage and seals for the load, speed and temperature. - 2
2
Store
The storeroom keeps the bearing clean, dry and still until it is needed. - 3
3
Mount
The technician checks the shaft and housing, then fits the bearing with the correct method and tools. - 4
4
Lubricate
The right lubricant goes in, in the right amount, at the right interval, without dirt or water. - 5
5
Monitor
Vibration, temperature, ultrasound and oil analysis show how the bearing is doing while the machine runs. - 6
6
Analyse
When a bearing is removed, someone studies it to find out why it failed, and the cause is corrected.
Who influences bearing life
Many people touch a bearing during its life, and each one can shorten it. The buyer may choose a cheaper bearing with a different clearance. The storekeeper may keep bearings on a shelf next to a vibrating compressor. The fitter may heat a bearing with a gas torch. The lubrication technician may add grease every week "to be safe". The operator may run a pump against a closed valve.
None of these people wants a failure. They simply do not see the link between their action and a bearing that fails three months later. Good reliability work makes that link visible, so the whole team protects the bearing.
How the course is organised
Put the life cycle in order
Arrange the stages of a bearing life from first to last.
- 1Analyse it after removal
- 2Lubricate it correctly
- 3Store it clean, dry and still
- 4Monitor it while the machine runs
- 5Select the bearing for load, speed and temperature
- 6Mount it with the correct method
A motor bearing has been replaced three times in a year. What should happen before the fourth replacement?
