Why Aspects Come First in ISO 14001
The place of aspects and impacts in an environmental management system, and what the standard actually requires.

In this course you will learn to identify how an organisation interacts with the environment, decide which interactions matter most, and turn that decision into action. This work sits at the centre of an environmental management system (EMS). ISO 14001, the international standard for environmental management systems, builds almost everything else on it: objectives, operational controls, emergency preparedness, competence and monitoring all point back to the significant environmental aspects.
What ISO 14001 asks for
The environmental aspects of activities, products and services that the organisation can control and those it can influence, and their associated environmental impacts, considering a life cycle perspective.
Why this order matters
An organisation that skips a careful aspect assessment usually sets objectives on whatever is easy to measure, such as office paper, while its real impacts sit elsewhere. A thorough assessment points effort where it does most good.
Example 1. A logistics company first set objectives on office recycling. Its aspect assessment later showed that vehicle fuel combustion and refrigerant leaks from its chilled trailers were its largest impacts by far. Objectives were reset, and the effort moved to driver training, route planning and refrigerant leak checks.
Example 2. A paint manufacturer had good controls on its stack emissions because they were permitted. The assessment found an unregistered aspect: wash water from tank cleaning entering a surface water drain during maintenance. The control followed the finding.
A common misunderstanding
Some people believe ISO 14001 requires a specific scoring method. It does not. The organisation sets its own criteria, as long as they are established, documented and applied consistently. This freedom is useful, but it also means a weak method can pass unnoticed unless someone tests it. Later modules show how to build and test one.
