HSEQ stands for health, safety, environment and quality. Many organisations manage these four areas together, so they use one short name for all of them. In this course you will see how one management system can look after all four.

Each letter protects something different. Health and safety protect people. Environment protects the air, water, land and the community around the work. Quality protects the customer and the reputation of the organisation.

The four areas

Health is about harm that often builds up slowly: noise that damages hearing, dust that damages lungs, heat stress, back pain from lifting, and stress from workload. The harm may appear months or years later.

Example 1: a vehicle workshop

One workshop changes engine oil. Health: mechanics touch used oil, which can irritate skin. Safety: a car on a lift could fall. Environment: used oil could reach the drain. Quality: the wrong grade of oil could damage the customer's engine. One task touches all four letters.

Example 2: an office cleaning contract

Cleaners use chemicals (health), work on wet floors and ladders (safety), produce waste and use water (environment), and must clean to the standard written in the contract (quality).

Match each problem to its HSEQ area

Match the workplace problem on the left with the area it belongs to.

  • A worker slowly loses hearing after years near a compressor
  • A ladder slips and a worker falls
  • Paint thinner is poured into a rainwater drain
  • A batch of bolts is delivered in the wrong size

A delivery driver reverses quickly and hits a parked customer car, damaging the customer's order. Which HSEQ areas are involved?

Select all that apply.
