Purpose and Intended Outcomes

ISO 14001 specifies requirements for an environmental management system that an organisation can use to enhance its environmental performance. The standard states three intended outcomes:

• Enhancement of environmental performance;
• Fulfilment of compliance obligations;
• Achievement of environmental objectives.

Performance, not just process

Earlier generations of the standard could be satisfied by a well-documented system that changed nothing on the ground. The current text closes that gap: performance improvement is an outcome, not a by-product, and top management must demonstrate it.

What certification means

A certificate says an independent body found a system that meets the requirements and is being followed. It does not say the organisation has a small environmental footprint, and it does not substitute for a permit. Both points are worth making internally, because "we are 14001 certified" is regularly offered as an answer to questions it does not address.
