What Level 4 is

The International Well Control Forum (IWCF) is a not-for-profit membership organisation, set up in 1992, that sets standards for well control training and assessment and certifies candidates through accredited training and assessment centres. Its Drilling Well Control programme has three certified levels: Level 2 (Introductory), Level 3 (Equipment Operator) and Level 4 (Supervisor). Level 1 is a free awareness programme. A separate programme, Well Intervention Pressure Control, has the same levels for intervention work.

Level 4 is the supervisor level. It is for the people who plan a well's well control, decide how a kick is killed, and are accountable when it goes wrong: toolpushers, drilling supervisors and company representatives, drilling superintendents, drilling engineers and rig managers. A Level 4 holder is expected to design the barriers of a well, judge a kill as it happens, defend a decision to the operator and the regulator, and handle the complication nobody planned for.

Where this course sits

This course follows IWCF Level 3 Driller Well Control Exam Preparation, which covers the driller's depth: the full kill sheet, the two circulating methods step by step, the driller's responses when a kill goes wrong, and the practical simulator assessment. Everything in that course is assumed here. Where a Level 3 topic is needed again, it is recapped in a few lines and not re-taught.

What is new at Level 4 is judgement. A driller must execute the kill correctly. A supervisor must decide which kill, check every number before it is used, see the complication coming, and run the people and the communication around the event. The verbs change from "do" and "calculate" to "design", "judge", "defend" and "handle the edge case". The practice questions in this course are written to those verbs.

What this course is and is not

Two example companies you will meet

Scenarios in this course use invented companies. Varnoth Energy and Talvessa Petroleum are operators. Delvane Offshore is a drilling contractor. Halvoran Energy is an operator with a mixed portfolio. Sarnet Process Services is a service company. None of them is a real company, and any resemblance to a real well is accidental. Where a real incident is named (Macondo in 2010, Montara in 2009), only what the public inquiries found is used.

A typical scenario reads like this. "The Varnoth Energy drilling supervisor on a Delvane Offshore jack-up is told the well has been shut in on a 20-barrel gain. The driller reports SIDPP 520 psi and SICP 800 psi." The question then asks what you, the supervisor, check, decide or say. That is the shape of a Level 4 question: a situation, a decision, and a reason you could defend.
