Leverage, cumulative damage and why most injuries have no single cause.

The spine behaves as a lever with a very short effort arm. Holding a load away from the body multiplies the compressive force on the lumbar discs several times over — a 10 kg load held at arm's length can impose a spinal load comparable to lifting 50 kg close to the body.

What increases the load

  • Distance from the body — the dominant factor by a wide margin.
  • Twisting while loaded, which shears the disc rather than compressing it evenly.
  • Stooping rather than using the legs.
  • Reaching above shoulder height or below knee height.
  • Sudden or jerky movement, and unexpected shifts in the load.
  • Repetition and duration, without recovery time.

Cumulative rather than single-event

Most back injuries are not caused by the lift during which the pain appeared. Tissue damage accumulates over months or years, and the final lift is simply the one that exceeded the remaining tolerance. This is why investigating only the reported lift finds nothing wrong, and why "he lifted it badly" is almost always the wrong conclusion.

The injury you report is the last straw. The control has to address the preceding thousand lifts.
