How a Warehouse Works and Where People Get Hurt

The main areas and activities of a warehouse, and the hazards found in each.

A warehouse looks simple: goods come in, are stored, and go out. Inside, many activities happen at the same time in a shared space. Trucks move loads, people walk and pick orders, delivery vehicles arrive and leave. Most serious injuries happen where these activities meet.

The flow of goods

Almost every warehouse follows the same flow. Goods are received at the loading bay, put away into racking or floor storage, picked when a customer orders them, packed, and dispatched through the loading bay again. Each stage has its own hazards.

Areas and their main hazards

Reversing vehicles, trailers moving away, falls from the dock edge, delivery drivers who do not know the site.

The most common causes of injury

  • People struck by lift trucks or other vehicles.
  • Manual handling injuries to the back, shoulders and arms.
  • Slips, trips and falls on the same level.
  • Objects falling from height, from racking or from a raised load.
  • Falls from height, from ladders, loads or the dock edge.

Example: a busy morning

At 07:00 three delivery trucks arrive at once. A lift truck driver hurries to unload them. A picker takes a shortcut across the loading area to reach the office. The driver, reversing with a tall load, does not see her. Nothing in this situation is unusual. That is why warehouses need clear layouts and rules: the risk is built into normal work.
