Why Electrical Safety Concerns Everyone
Electricity is a hazard for every worker, not only for electricians.

Many people think electrical safety is a subject for electricians only. This is a dangerous mistake. Electricians are trained, authorised and equipped for electrical work. Most people injured by electricity are not electricians. They are cleaners, drivers, labourers, kitchen staff, office workers and plant operators. They meet electricity every day without thinking about it.
In this course you will learn to recognise electrical hazards, follow the safe procedures that protect you, and know what to do when something goes wrong. You will not learn to carry out electrical work. That needs separate training and a formal authorisation.
Where ordinary workers meet electricity
Extension leads under desks, phone chargers, heaters, kettles and printers. Overloaded sockets and damaged cables are the usual problems.
Two everyday cases
A cleaner and a floor polisher. A cleaner uses a floor polisher every evening. The cable has a small cut near the plug, covered with tape. One night the floor is wet. The cleaner picks up the cable at the taped point and feels a strong shock. The cleaner is lucky and lets go. The defect was visible for weeks, but nobody reported it.
A labourer and a scaffold tube. A labourer carries a long metal tube across a yard. Above the yard there is an overhead power line. The labourer lifts the tube upright to turn a corner. The tube does not need to touch the line: at higher voltages electricity can jump across a gap. Nobody had marked the line or warned the workers.
Neither person was doing electrical work. Both were exposed to electrical danger.
The four main harms
Electricity harms people in four main ways. Electric shock is current passing through the body. Burns come from current, from hot surfaces and from arcs. Arc flash is an explosive release of energy that does not need contact. Fire starts from overheating cables and equipment. Each of these has its own controls, and the course covers each one in turn.
Match each worker to a typical electrical exposure
Pair each job with the electrical hazard it most often meets.
