Understanding Heat Stress and Strain
Distinguish between environmental heat stress acting on the body and the physiological heat strain the body experiences as a result.

External Load vs. Internal Response
In occupational health, the words stress and strain have exact technical meanings borrowed from engineering. Confusing them can lead safety teams to make critical mistakes when planning controls.
Heat stress is the net heat load imposed on a worker. It comes from three combined sources:
- Environmental conditions: High air temperature, radiant heat from sources like the sun or hot machinery, high relative humidity, and low air movement.
- Metabolic heat: The internal heat produced by muscle activity during physical labor.
- Clothing and PPE: Non-breathable garments, coveralls, and respirators that trap heat and block sweat evaporation.
Heat stress is the total external and operational challenge placed upon the body.
What Is Heat Strain?
Heat strain is the physiological response or consequence of that heat stress on the human body. It is the biological effort required to maintain a stable core temperature around 37°C (98.6°F).
When heat stress increases, the body attempts to cool itself through thermoregulation. Measurable indicators of heat strain include:
- An increased heart rate as the cardiovascular system pumps blood to the skin surface to radiate heat.
- Profuse sweating to cool the body through evaporation.
- An increase in core body temperature if cooling mechanisms fail to keep pace with heat intake.
- Sensations of fatigue, thirst, dizziness, or confusion as internal resources are depleted.
Workplace Realities: Stress vs. Strain in Action
Common Misconceptions and How to Correct Them
Differentiating Stress from Strain
Match each workplace observation to whether it describes Heat Stress or Heat Strain.
- Operating a jackhammer in 33°C direct sunlight
- A worker's heart rate climbing to 135 bpm while carrying pipe
- Wearing a non-breathable chemical splash suit and full respirator
- Sustained profuse sweating resulting in a 1.5 kg loss of body weight
