What Electricity Powers on an Oilfield
The main electrical loads on a field and what happens when power is lost.

Oil and gas fields depend on electricity at almost every step. Power drives the pumps that lift oil from wells, the compressors that move gas, the heaters that keep fluids flowing, and the instruments and control systems that keep the process safe. When the power stops, most of the field stops with it.
This course is for technicians, operators and supervisors who work around electrical equipment every day but are not yet electrical specialists. It explains how a field electrical system is built, how the main equipment works, and the safe working principles that protect you and the plant. Later courses in the series go deeper into switchgear and transformers.
The main electrical loads on a field
Artificial lift such as electrical submersible pumps (ESPs) and beam pumps driven by electric motors. On many fields these are the largest group of loads, spread across remote well pads.
What happens when power is lost
A total loss of power is called a blackout. Pumps and compressors stop, and the process must shut down in a controlled way. Gas that cannot be compressed may be sent to the flare. Wells may need to be restarted one by one, and some equipment, such as an ESP, can be damaged if it is restarted too quickly.
Worked example 1. A gas engine generator trips on a field that has three generators running. The remaining two cannot carry the full load. Protection then sheds less important loads, such as camp air conditioning, so that the process loads stay on. Good design means a single failure causes a reduced service, not a blackout.
Worked example 2. A cable to a remote well pad is cut by an excavator. Only the wells on that pad stop. The rest of the field keeps running because the distribution system gives each area its own protected feeder.
Which group of loads uses little power but must never lose its supply?
Match each load to its group
Pair each piece of equipment with the area of the field it belongs to.
- Electrical submersible pump
- Gas compressor
- Emergency shutdown system
- Accommodation air conditioning
