How Industrial Distribution Systems Are Arranged

Radial, ring and secondary selective arrangements, and how to choose between them.

This course is for electrical technicians, supervisors and engineers who already know the basics of a field electrical system and now operate, maintain or modify switchgear. It covers switchboard construction, breakers, protection and coordination, switching and arc flash, motor control centres and maintenance, and then puts these together in realistic cases.

Every switchboard sits inside a larger arrangement. The arrangement decides what happens when a transformer or cable fails, what can be maintained without a shutdown, and how complex the switching and protection must be. Before you can judge a switching programme or a protection setting, you need to recognise which arrangement you are working on.

The three common arrangements

One source feeds one switchboard through one transformer. Cheap and simple to protect, because current flows in one direction. A single failure of the transformer or incoming cable loses the whole board until it is repaired.

Trade-offs you must weigh

More redundancy brings more switching steps, more interlocks and more ways to make an error. A main-tie-main board allows maintenance of one transformer with the plant running, but only if the remaining transformer can carry the load and the protection has been set for that configuration. A ring improves restoration time, but a protection scheme that assumed radial flow can misoperate when the open point is moved.

Case 1. On a main-tie-main board, the operator closes the tie to take incomer A out for maintenance. During the afternoon peak, transformer B runs at 115% of its rating and its winding temperature alarm operates. The planner had checked the board load against the night-time figure. The fix is to plan the outage with the real peak and agree load reductions in advance.

Case 2. A ring main open point is moved to isolate a damaged cable. The earth fault relay at one substation now sees fault current flowing the opposite way and is slow to operate during a later fault. Moving an open point is a change to the system that protection engineers must review.

Choosing the arrangement for a new compressor station

A new compressor station must keep running through the loss of any one transformer. The budget is tight, and the operations team wants simple switching. Which arrangement should you recommend for the 400 V process board?

Match the arrangement to its main weakness

  • Simple radial
  • Secondary selective
  • Open ring
  • Permanent parallel
