This course is awareness training on ladder and stairway safety, aligned with the rules of the US Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). It covers the general industry rules in Title 29 of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), Part 1910, and the construction rules in 29 CFR Part 1926, Subpart X.
It is written for workers and supervisors who use portable ladders, fixed ladders and stairs at work: maintenance technicians, warehouse staff, electricians, painters, construction crews and the people who supervise them. No earlier training is needed.
Why ladders and stairs hurt people
Ladders and stairs look simple, and that is part of the problem. People use them every day without thinking, so small mistakes become habits. A fall from a low height can still cause a serious head, back or wrist injury, and a fall onto machinery or a hard edge can kill.
Investigations of ladder and stair falls usually find one or more of the same causes. They are listed below. Each one is a topic later in the course.
