- Structure data as a clean table — one row per record, one column per field — and explain why messy sheets break analysis
- Clean imported data by trimming text, converting text to numbers and dates, splitting combined fields and handling blanks deliberately
- Apply exact-match lookups, conditional logic and error handling, and explain why approximate match is dangerous
- Aggregate data with pivot tables and build a chart from the pivot that answers a stated question
- Use named ranges and absolute, relative and mixed references so formulas survive being copied and extended
- Control spreadsheet risk through input/calculation/output separation, peer review and version control, and recognise when a database or BI tool is needed instead
