Why precise words matter
Reward discussions go wrong surprisingly often because people use the same word for different things. A manager says "salary" and means base pay; a candidate hears "salary" and means base pay plus allowances; a finance colleague means the total cost to the employer. Each is right in their own world, and the decision that follows can be wrong by a large amount.
Fix the vocabulary first. Every later topic — ranges, reviews, bonuses, benchmarks — depends on comparing like with like.
