What an iCompetent certificate proves, and how anyone can check it

When you finish an online course on iCompetent, you can get a certificate of completion. This post explains what that certificate proves, what it does not claim, and how anyone can check it.

When you get a certificate

You get a certificate when you have completed every lesson of the course and passed every module quiz. Before we issue it, you check the name that will be printed on it. Each certificate has its own number, such as CERT-2026-000000. Numbers are never reused.

What it shows

  • Your name and the title of the course.
  • The date you completed it.
  • The learning time: the length of the course's lessons. It is not a number of accredited hours.
  • A verification link, so anyone can check that the certificate is real.

What it does not claim

A certificate of completion records that you finished the course. The quizzes are graded on our server, but nobody watches you take them. So the certificate is not proof that you are competent to do the work. That proof comes from your workplace, when an assessor signs you off.

How an employer checks it

There are two ways. The first is the verification link printed on the certificate. It shows the holder's name, the course and the date. The second is the certificate number: go to icompetent.com/verify, type the number and press Check the certificate. A check by number shows the course, the date and the learning time, but never the holder's name. This protects learners, because anyone could try numbers one after another.

If you want an employer to see your name, send them the verification link, or share the certificate on LinkedIn from its page.
