What you'll learn

  • Explain why most workplace skill is transferred by colleagues and what goes wrong when that transfer is unstructured
  • Prepare to instruct by breaking a task into steps and key points, gathering the tools and the correct procedure, and making the area safe
  • Apply the four-step job instruction cycle: prepare the learner, present the operation, try-out performance, follow up
  • Check understanding with questions that reveal what the learner actually knows, and correct performance without taking over the task
  • Adapt your instruction to the learner's experience and language, and recognise when someone is not yet competent
  • Record what was covered and distinguish friendly encouragement from formal assessment by an authorised assessor
