OSHA's Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response standard, 29 CFR 1910.120 (HAZWOPER), requires general site workers to complete at least 40 hours of off-site instruction before they work on a hazardous waste site. This course delivers those 40 hours over five days. It covers the regulations, site characterization, toxicology, exposure limits, personal protective equipment (PPE) Levels A to D, respiratory protection, decontamination, site control, air monitoring, drums and containers, confined spaces, emergency response and medical surveillance. Much of the time is hands-on: participants put on and take off PPE, run a decontamination line and use monitoring instruments. The standard also requires at least three days of field experience under a trained, experienced supervisor, and site-specific training for each site. Your employer must still provide both. This course alone does not make a worker HAZWOPER-qualified for a specific site. Occasional site workers need 24 hours of instruction under the standard, and every trained worker needs an 8-hour refresher each year. We run those as separate sessions. Participants who complete the course receive a certificate of attendance that records the 40 hours of instruction and the result of the final exam.
