Safe Electrical Work Practices

How to stay alive around electrical systems: recognising shock, arc flash and fire hazards, working dead as the default, isolating and proving dead correctly, and understanding approach distances, arc-rated PPE and who is authorised to do what. For technicians, maintainers and anyone whose work takes them into electrical panels or near live equipment.

What you'll learn

  • Describe the three electrical hazard mechanisms - shock, arc flash and fire - and how each injures people
  • Explain why dead working is the default and what must be true before any live work is permitted
  • Apply the isolate-and-prove-dead sequence in the correct order, including proving the tester before and after the dead test
  • Relate electrical isolation to permit-to-work and lockout/tagout discipline, including personal locks and controlled hand-back
  • Explain approach boundaries, barriers and the purpose of arc-rated PPE, and distinguish competent from authorised persons
  • Carry out user-level inspection of portable electrical equipment and remove defective items from service
