Set up your organisation
Organisations use the iCompetent workspace at corp.icompetent.com to track who is competent at what. This page explains the set-up and the main ideas.
Create a workspace
- Step 1: Go to corp.icompetent.com and sign in with your iCompetent account, or create one.
- Step 2: The first time, a set-up wizard asks how you want to use iCompetent. Choose Organization.
- Step 3: Enter your organisation name, a workspace address, your industry, your organisation size and your country.
- Step 4: Optionally add departments, job titles, people and a few skills. You can skip any of these and finish them later.
If you signed up with an email and password, you need to verify your email address before you can create an organisation. Use the Resend verification email button if you need a new link.
The key ideas
| Term | What it means |
|---|---|
| Department | A unit of your organisation. Departments can sit inside other departments. |
| Job title | A role in your organisation, with the skills that role requires. |
| Person | Someone's employment record in your organisation. |
| Required skill | A skill a job title needs, at a stated level, as optional, mandatory or statutory. |
| Competency record | A formal statement that a person is competent at a skill to a level, with dates and evidence. |
| Assessor | A person you have authorised to sign off a skill up to a level. |
A person's competency records belong to them, not to the employer. If they move to another organisation, their records go with them.
Job titles and required skills
A job title is where you say what the role needs. For each required skill you choose the skill, the level the person must reach, and whether it is mandatory or optional.
As soon as a person has a job title, its required skills appear on their profile and on your skills matrix. A job title with no required skills produces no tracking at all — this is the most common reason a matrix looks empty.
Skills in your organisation
- Import a skill from the marketplace — the same catalogue you see on icompetent.com. Your copy is yours; when the original is improved, your copy shows Update available and you decide when to take it.
- Create a custom skill for work that is special to your organisation, and write its content yourself.
- Assign a skill to a department or a job title as optional, mandatory or statutory. Statutory means it is required by law or regulation.
Roles in a workspace
| Role | What they can do |
|---|---|
| Administrator | Manage people, job titles, skills, settings and competency records. |
| Member | See the organisation's data and manage their own learning. |
| Assessor | A member who may sign off a particular skill, up to a particular level. |
