How skills work

Every skill has four levels, from Awareness to Mastery. Each level is made of reading, practical tasks and assessments, and the levels open one after another.

The four levels

LevelWhat it means
AwarenessYou know the skill exists and why it matters.
KnowledgeYou understand the concepts and principles behind it.
SkillYou can apply it correctly in real situations.
MasteryYou perform it expertly and can teach or improve it.

What is inside a level

Each level contains items. There are three kinds:

ItemWhat you doHow it is completed
Reading (knowledge)Read the material. You mark it as done.
Task (assignment)Carry out a practical task. You mark it as done. Some tasks ask you to attach evidence first.
AssessmentAnswer a set of questions.Only by passing it. You cannot mark it done by hand.

Items are either required or optional. Only required items count towards finishing a level.

Levels open in order

A level opens when every required item in the level before it is done. Until then it is shown as locked, with the message Finish the level before this one to open it.

  • Optional items never block you.
  • An item that is waiting for someone to sign it off does not count as done, so it can keep the next level closed.
  • A level whose own required items are already done stays open, even if new items are later added to an earlier level.

How progress is counted

Your progress is worked out from the items you have completed every time you open the skill. If the skill is updated, the items you completed stay completed, new items appear as not done, and your percentage changes to match.

Find a skill

Open the skills catalogue and search by name, or browse the list. Each skill page shows the total time, the levels, how many items it has, What you'll learn and the full Curriculum. You can read all of this without an account.
