Start and work through a skill

Add a skill to your account, then work through its items level by level. This page covers starting a skill, the learning screen, evidence, and how self-study differs from an employer's sign-off.

Start a skill

  1. Step 1: Open a skill from the skills catalogue.
  2. Step 2: Press the start button. If you are not signed in, it reads Sign in to start and takes you to sign in first.
  3. Step 3: The first time, a short form asks for your first name, last name and country. This creates your personal skills profile. The skill is then added for you.
  4. Step 4: Press Continue to open the learning screen. The skill page now shows In your skills.

Adding a skill is free. Pressing the button twice never adds the skill twice.

The learning screen

  • The levels and their items are listed on the left, with your Overall progress at the top. On a phone, open the list with the menu button.
  • Each item is labelled Reading, Task or Assessment, and many show how long they take.
  • Use Previous and Next to move between items.
  • Use the close button to go back to the skill page.

Complete items

For a reading or a task, finish the work and press Mark as done. If you change your mind, press Mark not done.

An assessment shows This completes when you pass the assessment. See Assessments.

Attach evidence

Some tasks ask for proof that you did the work. These show an Evidence panel. Attach the file before you mark the task as done.

  • Accepted files: photos (PNG, JPEG, WebP), PDF documents and short videos (MP4, WebM).
  • Each file can be up to 512 KB. Take photos at a lower resolution, or save a compressed PDF, if your file is too large.

Self-study and employer sign-off

Some items need an assessor — a person authorised by an organisation — to confirm the work. Inside an organisation, these items wait for that sign-off. See Assessors and sign-off.

When you learn on your own, there is no assessor. Those items are completed when you mark them as done, and the result is recorded as Self-studied.

Your skills on your profile

Your skills appear under Your skills on your profile, with your progress on each. Finished skills show Competent, or Expired if the skill has a validity period that has passed.

If a skill has a validity period and your record expires, you do not have to repeat the whole skill. Pass its assessment again: this moves your completion date forward and your record is current again.
